Job Description

The Steeplechase at Callaway is seeking a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as its next Executive Director.  Reporting to and working closely with the Race Chairman and Executive Committee, you will play a critical role in planning, managing, and marketing this annual day of horseracing which typically welcomes 3,000-4,000 fans each year as Georgia’s only Steeplechase.  With the Race Chairman, you will execute a distinct and elegant event that raises money for local arts organizations in Columbus, Georgia.

The primary working relationship of the Executive Director is with community volunteers.  Each year, a member of the community volunteers as Race Director and selects volunteer committees to manage different aspects of the Event.  While working with volunteer committee chairs, the Executive Director will supervise and manage fundraising, sponsorships, marketing, ticket sales and event management.

This position is year round with the workload picking up as the event approaches.  Compensation will be based on experience.

Responsibilities of the Executive Director include,

  1. Collaborate with the Executive committee and internal accounting services to develop and manage the organization’s annual budget.
  2. Ensure all components of the Event are conducted on-time and in a first-class professional manner
  3. Work with the Race Chairman to manage and execute all existing sponsorship proposals for the Event and initiate additional sponsorship opportunities.
  4. Manage media relationships and develop promotional programs.
  5. Management and improvement of the existing website for advertising, ticket sales and ticketing software.
  6. Oversee creative elements for the event, including:
  7. Selection of theme and artist for the year.
  8. In partnership with the Race Director, manage relationships associated with the event including the National Steeplechase Association, Steeplechase at Callaway landlord, Joe Rogers, the beneficiaries and Callaway Gardens and Resorts.
  9. Throughout the year, the Executive Director will manage relationships and communication  with the vendors, suppliers, security, sponsors, beneficiaries and other aspects of the event.
  10. In partnership with the Race Director, organize a volunteer force, assigning goals and objectives for each individual division/committee and a framework through which each can work to achieve success.
  11. Management of the approval of expenses, invoices and budget for the volunteer work force.
