INTRO TO POSITIONThe Director of Total Rewards leads and directs benefits and compensation programs at NPR. In this role, you will report to the Chief People Officer and work collaboratively across the People Team . This role is responsible for developing and driving a total rewards strategy that supports a culture of high performance to attract, reward, and retain top talent.
The Director of Total Rewards provides strategic leadership over all benefits and compensation programs leveraging best practices to enhance employee experience, efficiency and compliance. We are seeking a dynamic leader with advanced expertise in HR functions to manage and guide our team, ensuring that we meet the high expectations of our employees and internal People Team. This role requires a proactive approach to communication, follow-up, and delivering timely, accurate responses, particularly within the Benefits department. The ideal candidate will excel in fostering a high-touch, responsive environment to address and fulfill the needs of our staff effectively.
This leader will work collaboratively with NPR leadership, Finance, and other People Team functional areas.
RESPONSIBILITIESBenefits Strategy- Lead the overall benefits strategy, incorporating a data-driven approach to recommendations and implementation of changes and improvement to our programs to maintain competitive advantage and meet needs of organization
- Provide strategic direction and oversight for organization's benefits and retirement plans, leave programs, and compensation initiatives to support employee engagement strategies
- Oversee management of benefit broker resources, benefits enrollment processes, and leave administration
- Effectively and consistently manage relationships with healthcare and benefit providers, benefit advisors, and all key stakeholders associated with providing benefits to organization
- Lead benefits and compensation compliance activities across the organization, ensuring compliance with any relevant federal, state, and local laws, including total reward regulations (e.g., ACA, Form 5500, and ERISA reporting)
- Oversees competitive benefits programs (healthcare, 403(b)), staying abreast of market trends and compliance changes
- Oversee benefits team driving high performance through coaching, development, and mentoring
- Own budget responsibilities for benefits and compensation ensuring cost-effective use of resources
Compensation Strategy- Develop and execute compensation strategy to support organizational objectives
- Develop communication materials and lead trainings to educate staff on company compensation philosophy and programs
- Lead annual compensation planning conducting ongoing review of current compensation practices and market conditions to continually evolve organization's compensation practices
- Evaluate the effectiveness of our rewards programs and lead initiatives to design and implement improvements
- Lead data-driven decision making utilizing analytics to support compensation decisions
- Partner closely with Chief People Officer, HR business partners, and additional stakeholders to ensure that total rewards programs are integrated into broader HR and organizational strategies
- Lead compensation projects from initial concept to successful implementation
- Ensure compliance with legal requirements and governance related to compensation and benefits programs

- Expertise in development of strategy and administration of benefits and compensation
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a high-performing team in a complex organization
- Benefits plan design experience
- Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills with the ability to provide advice and counsel to senior leadership and negotiate with insurance and benefit vendors
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to use data to drive decisions
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS- CCP or CMS, SPHR or SHRM-CP or CEBS preferred
- Experience developing and administering benefits and compensation programs in a unionized environment
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTBachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience
WORK LOCATIONHybrid Permitted: This is a hybrid permitted role. Some aspects of this role include duties that are better performed at an NPR facility. The employee will be required to be onsite at the
[Washington, DC / Culver City / New York City] office at least 10 days a year. The employee must also reside in an NPR supported location based on the number of onsite days they choose.

COMPENSATIONSalary Range: The U.S. based anticipated salary range for this opportunity is $150,000 -$170,000 plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salaries NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
Benefits: NPR offers access to comprehensive benefits for employees and dependents. Regular, full-time employees scheduled to work 30 hours or more per week are eligible to enroll in NPR's benefits options.
