A barback's job is to support bartenders and ensure the bar runs smoothly by keeping the bar stocked and clean, and helping with customer service: 

• Stocking

  Barbacks restock liquor, beer, and spirits, as well as garnishes, napkins, straws, and other bar items.   They may also organize liquor shelves and prepare juices and mixers.  

   

   

• Cleaning

  Barbacks clean bar and table surfaces, including wiping down chairs and railings.   They also clean up spills and broken glasses, and empty the dishwasher.  

   

   

• Customer service

  Barbacks assist bartenders with taking orders and processing them in the point-of-sale system.   They also answer customer questions and route complaints to the appropriate staff member.  

   

   

• Other duties

  Barbacks may also help with breaking down the bar after service, taking out the trash, and sweeping and mopping.   They may also troubleshoot simple malfunctions with taps, coolers, and other appliances.  

   

   

Barbacks are often considered to be budding bartenders, as they learn the craft while contributing to the bar's operation.  

Some skills and requirements for a barback job include:

• Being able to work in a fast-paced environment

• Having a team spirit

• Having a basic knowledge of bar menu items and recipes

• Being physically able to lift beer kegs, hold trays of bottles and glassware, and stand during the shift

• Being flexible to work during evenings, weekends, and public holidays

• Having a high school diploma
