DescriptionnnJob Summary/Overall ObjectivesnnProduces diagnostic images using ultrasound equipment to assist physicians in the diagnosis of disease and for interventional procedures.nnEssential Job FunctionsnnCollects pertinent data about the patient and procedure.nnConfirms the patient's identification and verifies the physician's order.nnAssures the proper screening protocol is completed.nnProvides information to the patient about the procedure.nnVerifies the patient has consented to the procedure and answers any questions the patient may have.nnProvides accurate explanations and instructions at an appropriate time and at a level the patient can understand.nnAnalyzes the information obtained during the assessment phase to determine optimal imaging parameters per diagnosis.nnDetermines whether the patient has been appropriately prepared for the procedure.nnAssesses factors that may contraindicate procedures such as medications and insufficient patient preparation.nnSelects appropriate ultrasound equipment and scanning techniques based on the age and size of the patient and the objective of the exam to optimize the procedure and minimize patient exposure to acoustic energy.nnObtains optimum images during scan.nnAdjusts as needed to better visualize the anatomy or pathology according to established protocols and guidelines.nnSends images to PACS for interpretation by radiologist.nnActs based on patient and procedural variances.nnNotifies appropriate healthcare provider when immediate clinical response is necessary based on findings and patient condition.nnInitiates additional scanning techniques for further investigation of area of interest.nnCollects and documents additional images and patient data as needed.nnProvides the interpreting physician with a summary of findings according to hospital protocol.nnDocuments information about patient care, exams, and patient history in appropriate record.nnVerifies correct order is entered into HIS/RIS.nnDocuments appropriate patient history into PACS system.nnDocuments any exceptions to the established guidelines.nnFacilitates correspondence with all departments to assure procedures are done in a timely manner.nnWorks with centralized scheduling, nursing units and ER to accommodate STAT or ASAP orders.nnResponds to emergency call per department procedures.nnMaintains equipment and workstation in optimum condition.nnPerforms daily QC on equipment.nnAssures adequate patient care and office supplies are maintained.nnReports equipment malfunction to service provider and supervisor.nnImplements downtime procedures when necessary.nnCoordinates rescheduling of patients during equipment downtime.nnInitiates established downtime procedures during HIS/RIS and PACS downtime.nnAttends department meetings/reviews minutes as required.nnOther duties as assigned.nnCompetency and Experience (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)nnRequired Qualifications/ExperiencennCompletion of CAAHEP accredited Medical Ultrasound ProgramnnPreferred Qualifications/ExperiencennOne year ultrasound experiencennLicense, Certification & ClearancesnnCurrent Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program.nnCurrent registry with the American Registry Diagnostic Medical Sonographers with 1 certifications of the following: Abdominal, Vascular, OB/GYN, Breast, or Nuchal Translucency.nnAct 33 clearancennAct 34 with renewalnnAct 73 FBI ClearancennSupervisory ResponsibilitiesnnThis position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.nnWork EnvironmentnnSee chart below.nnPosition Type/Expected Hours of WorknnIncumbents will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.).nnTravel may be expected locally between System locations.nnPhysical Demands/RequirementsnnSee chart below.nnEqual Employment OpportunitynnIndependence Health and its affiliated companies are Equal Opportunity Employers.
