Project Controls Specialist – Transmission and Distribution Projects
Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Project Controls Specialist to join our team, focusing on Transmission and Distribution projects in Canada. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in project management, cost control, scheduling, risk management, and reporting, specifically within the utility and energy sector. You will play a critical role in supporting the successful delivery of large-scale transmission and distribution projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Planning and Scheduling:
- Develop, maintain, and update project schedules for Transmission and Distribution projects.
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure accurate and timely project timelines.
- Use scheduling software (e.g., Primavera P6, MS Project) to track project milestones, dependencies, and resources.
- Assist with resource planning, allocation, and optimization across multiple projects.
Cost Control and Budget Management:
- Assist in developing and maintaining project budgets and forecasts for projects.
- Monitor project costs, ensuring alignment with approved budgets, and proactively identify potential cost overruns.
- Prepare cost reports, variance analysis, and financial projections for management and stakeholders.
- Work with the project team to ensure timely approval of change orders and manage the impact on the overall budget.
Risk Management and Issue Resolution:
- Identify and assess project risks and opportunities related to scope, cost, schedule, and resources.
- Develop and implement mitigation strategies to reduce project risks and ensure successful project execution.
- Proactively address any issues related to schedule delays, resource constraints, and budget deviations.
Reporting and Documentation:
- Prepare regular status reports, dashboards, and key performance indicators (KPIs) for project stakeholders, including management.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date project documentation, including change orders, work progress, and cost documentation.
- Assist in preparing presentations and reports for client meetings, project reviews, and audits.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Act as a liaison between internal project teams, project managers, and external contractors or vendors.
- Communicate regularly with all project stakeholders to ensure alignment and transparency.
- Participate in project meetings, providing updates on project performance and addressing any concerns related to cost or schedule.
Continuous Improvement:
- Contribute to the development and implementation of project controls best practices and standards.
- Provide feedback and suggestions for improving project controls processes to increase efficiency and effectiveness across projects.
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s in Engineering, Project Management, Construction Management, or a related field.
Experience:
- 5+ years of experience in project controls, including cost control, scheduling, and risk management, with a focus on transmission and distribution projects (preferably in the utilities or energy sectors).
- Experience working with projects is highly desirable.
- Proven experience with project management and controls software, such as Primavera P6, MS Project, or similar tools.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of project control techniques, including Earned Value Management (EVM), critical path analysis, and cost forecasting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and project management software.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Knowledge of Canadian project standards, safety regulations, and environmental policies is an asset.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PMP (Project Management Professional) or related certification.
- Experience with Canadian energy or utility projects.
Working Conditions:
- Hybrid – some office work and occasional travel to project sites across Ontario.
- Flexibility in working hours to accommodate project deadlines and collaboration with teams in different time zones.
