The Position
The General Manager of Mechanical Engineering will plan, direct, coordinate, and oversee activities in their department, ensuring the development and implementation of efficient and cost-effective operations to meet current and future needs of the company. The department consists of approximately 50 people. Direct reports to the General Manager include managers of the various product lines (steelmaking, casting, rolling mills, flat rolled processing lines, forging, fluid systems and upgrades). Design personnel move between the product lines as needed to support the workload. The General Manager needs to have a strong understanding of the equipment and systems involved in the metal processing world. The focus is on leading and developing the engineering team more so than being the “technical expert” in any one product line.
Strategic Responsibilities
- Personnel Strategy – recruiting, developing & retaining talent
- Regional Product Strategy –determine what products we will need to develop.
- Functional Strategy – aligning resources to support product strategy – 30%
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Recruit, interview, hire, and train management staff in the department.
- Oversee the daily workflow of the department.
- Provide constructive and timely performance evaluations.
- Oversee discipline and/or termination of employees in accordance with company policy.
Qualifications/Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering required; MBA and/or MSC Engineering preferred
- At least 15 years of related experience required.
- Management, Financial, technical, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Extensive knowledge of engineering principles and procedures.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent time management skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
