Job Title: R&D Specialist
Location: Addison, IL (On-Site)
Summary:
R&D Specialist provides technical expertise and contributes to the creation, maintenance and review of formulas for new and existing products; this individual is an active participant of new product ideation beginning at concept through successful commercialization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Use chemistry, microbiology, engineering, and other sciences to study the principles underlying the processing and deterioration of foods
• Analyze food content to determine levels of vitamins, fat, sugar, and protein; discover new food sources;
• Research ways to make processed foods safe, palatable, and healthful; and apply food science knowledge to determine best ways to process, package, preserve, store, and distribute food.
• Inspect food processing areas to ensure compliance with government regulations and standards for sanitation, safety, quality, and waste management standards.
• Evaluate food processing and storage operations and assist in the development of quality assurance programs for such operations.
• Study methods to improve aspects of foods, such as chemical composition, flavor, color, texture, nutritional value, and convenience.
• Stay up to-date on new regulations and current events regarding food science by reviewing scientific literature.
• Plan the manufacture of food products.
• Generate new product ideas and recipes, modifying and improving existing recipes, ensuring that strict hygiene food safety standards are met identifying and choosing products from suppliers.
• Checking and improving safety and quality control procedures from the raw material stage through to the finished product;
• Research current consumer markets and latest technologies to develop new product concepts;
• Deal with any customer complaint investigations or product issues;
• Compiling, checking and approving product specifications and labeling;
• Undertaking long-term projects with other departments, e.g. reducing waste by improving efficiency; working on packaging innovation and technology.
• Work with engineering, purchasing and production to develop solutions to production issues, while maintaining
food safety.
• Preparing product calculations based on raw materials and manufacturing costs to ensure profitable products.
Skills / Requirements:
• 2 year of experience in meat industry preferred but not required.
• Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Animal Science, Meat Science, Biology, or related field preferred but not required.
• Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or company’s stakeholders
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong decision making and problem-solving skills
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concreate variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
• Excellent planning, organizational, multi-tasking and project management skills
• Maintain a positive work environment.
Working conditions
Comfortable to work in cold and loud environment as this job requires to work in office and plant setting environment. The position requires the physical ability to do work requiring frequent stooping and bending, the physical strength to lift and carry 50 pounds, physical ability to stand for long hours, to do repetitive work, good visual acuity and ability to work long
hours and weekends when needed.
