TITLE : Teacher – Special Education

LOCATION: Arlington MA (Hours: 7:30am – 3pm)

DURATION: 6+ months

Additional specifics about the environment and responsibilities involved-

• The subject on this would be English for 12 students in grades 5-9
• However, a general Ed teacher that is interested in working in a therapeutic school would be fine as well.
• The class size is 4 students with one teacher and an assistant. In the upper elementary - middle school group, there are four teachers (currently one vacancy) and each teacher teachers their subject to the four classrooms.
• The teachers also play a supportive role in classes like current events, art, and group activity, taught by the assistants.
• The students have average to above-average cognitive abilities but have social and emotional challenges that require a small, supportive environment.
• It is a relaxed, relationship-based environment; students are generally able to work on some grade level concepts but also often need to build skills that they have missed over the years.
• There aren’t a lot of ‘acting out behavior’ – as they do not have any students with chronic school-related aggression related behavior.
• Most students struggle with anxiety, and challenges around school refusal but feel comfortable and psychologically safe!
• The scope and sequence is relaxed and teachers have flexibility in what and how they teach in order to make things interesting and meaningful. Overall, there is a wonderful group of students and staff that value shared community, compassion, collaboration, and flexibility..

SUMMARY :

Under the direction of the Educational Administrator, and under the daily supervision of the Team Leader, the Special Education Teacher will develop and teach curriculum to students with a variety of learning needs in a therapeutic and individualized learning environment. Also under the supervision of the Team Leader, the Special Education Teacher helps to develop and implement student IEPs, attends team meetings, and writes quarterly progress reports. The Special Education teacher will communicate with parents regarding academic performance as needed and will perform other duties as assigned by the Educational Administrator or Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Supervises classroom staff and students in classrooms and milieu
• Helps develop IEPs, integrates IEPs goals and objectives into lesson planning
• Develops, modifies, and implements curriculum to meet student needs
• Follows Massachusetts State Curriculum Frameworks
• Works cooperatively with clinical staff to problem-solve, address student needs
• Supports student access to sensory diets throughout day
• Provides social pragmatic supports to students throughout day
• Assists students with social-emotional processing as needed
• Supports students during nonacademic periods such as lunch and sensory breaks

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Massachusetts DESE certification in Special Education, Elementary Education, or Middle School/High School Content Area . (May consider waiver for right candidate)

Flexibility, team-oriented, problem solving with strong ability to build rapport Ability to effectively teach and support students with diverse learning needs

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor’s, Post-Bachelors’, or Master’s Degree in Psychology, Special Education, Education, or related field
