Search Launched for Manufacturing Leader


Location: Downeast Maine in the Ellsworth-Bucksport-Brewer Region


Zero Energy Homes is a start-up with a mission to build affordable, net zero energy homes using state-of-art, modular construction and 80% regionally sourced materials. The company launched in 2024 with Round I investments and broke ground on a demonstration home in Searsport. A portion of a $200,000 PRIME-2 COVID-impacted businesses development grant from the Maine Technology Institute, funded via the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and allocated by the Maine State Legislature via the Maine Jobs and Recovery plan, is providing initial funding for this first, full- time position. Grant funds will also be used to bring technology and innovations to modular manufacturing in Maine.


Position Summary: A ground-floor opportunity to combine manufacturing, materials science, and technology to advance a public mission.


The Vice President of Operations provides leadership and oversight for Zero Energy Homes’ business activities including development and operation of a new, modular manufacturing facility in downeast Maine. The individual will drive operational excellence and support the team of employees in meeting the highest quality standards and delivering customer satisfaction. Customer satisfaction includes providing attractive, livable, sustainable, high-performance homes at accessible, affordable prices.


A 15,000 sf modular manufacturing facility is planned. In Year 5, we estimate the plant will produce 50-60 high quality homes/year, with 40 full-time employees in one shift. The VP Operations is responsible for developing and implementing strategies aligned with overall business objectives and is an essential part of the leadership team. The VP Operations reports to the Chief Executive Officer and the Board of Directors (now in formation).


Zero Energy Homes LLC, will transition to a Maine Employee-Owned Cooperative Corporation in 2025 with three classes of stock, for employee members, investors and founders. Our intention is to provide a triple win for housing, climate, and sustainable economic development. Once successful, ZEH will export its business model to other parts of the country.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:


1. Lead with a positive, inclusive attitude that inspires commitment and continuous improvement in every job, for every person, every day. January 13, 2025


2. Oversee production of a high quality, high performance home product that consistently meets and exceeds customer expectations.


3. Lead a cross-departmental management team that oversees operational effectiveness and economy. This includes purchasing, manufacturing, finance, engineering, planning, marketing/sales, and maintenance.


4. Oversee development and administration of the annual and multi-year budget together with financial and other management staff.


5. Ensure a safe operation that meets and exceeds government regulations and best practices.


6. Help build a model company that includes people and the planet in the bottom line.


7. Participate in interviewing, hiring, training, and reviewing employees.


8. Identify, assess, and help implement strategic growth opportunities for the company.


9. Monitor and learn from the modular home building industry worldwide, incorporating innovations, technologies, practices, and efficiencies that improve the Zero Energy Homes family of products.


10. Represent and promote Zero Energy Homes at industry, economic and regional development, and affordable housing forums and networks including travel within Maine, the U.S., and potentially internationally to learn from other manufacturers.


11. Other duties as assigned by the chief executive officer.


Competencies / Experience:


Demonstrated success as a business manager including the ability to inspire trust and respect

Sharp analytical skills with the ability to synthesize complex information and plan strategically

Effective and collaborative problem solver

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Demonstrated ability to provide customer satisfaction

Experienced leader with a strong safety record and commitment to equality

Bachelor’s Degree and/or 10+ Years in Operations/Production management within Manufacturing

Several years of maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment

5+ years in leadership and personnel management

Manufacturing, modular, home building experience is ideal
