The Behavioral Health Medical Assistant (BHMA) supports the Behavioral Health team under the direction of the Director of Behavioral Health. This role collaborates closely with Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners (PNPs) and patients engaging in Behavioral Health services. Responsibilities encompass patient care, administrative tasks, clinical support, communication, compliance, and safety adherence.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient Care:

  • Prepare patients for behavioral health appointments by taking vitals, updating medical histories, and documenting symptoms or concerns.
  • Assist clinicians during assessments and treatments, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
  • Conduct follow-up calls for patient progress, additional instructions, or appointment reminders.
  • Support PNP practices through patient care services and medication reconciliation.

Administrative Tasks:

  • Manage appointment scheduling, including booking, rescheduling, and confirmations.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of patient interactions and treatments in the EHR system.
  • Process referrals, authorizations, and insurance verifications.
  • Assist with medication pre-authorizations, prescription management, and demographic updates.

Clinical Support:

  • Maintain a sanitized clinical environment, including cleaning equipment and rooms.
  • Oversee inventory management, including supplies and medication.
  • Perform basic lab tests and manage specimens appropriately.

Communication:

  • Act as a liaison between patients and providers, ensuring clear and effective communication.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • Educate patients and families about behavioral health conditions and treatment plans.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Adhere to healthcare regulations and ethical standards to protect patient confidentiality.
  • Participate in continuing education to stay updated on behavioral health best practices.
  • Report safety concerns or incidents promptly.


Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 1–2 years of experience.

Preferred:

  • Experience in a Behavioral Health setting.
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA).
  • Experience with Native American populations and EHR systems like eClinicalWorks.

Special Conditions:

  • Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, on-site schedule.
  • Current BLS and CPR certification (American Heart Association).
  • Reliable transportation, clean driving record, and state-required insurance.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in EMR systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and internet applications.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Compassionate, patient-centered approach to care.
  • Basic medical terminology and behavioral health knowledge.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Attention to detail and adherence to compliance standards.


Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to lift/move up to 30 pounds and maintain extended periods of sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Manual dexterity for medical instruments and office equipment.
  • Visual and auditory acuity to assess patient conditions accurately.


Work Environment:

  • Clinical setting with potential exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous materials.
  • Strict adherence to safety protocols.
