Director, Materials
Location: Burnsville, MN
Position Summary
This position will be responsible for managing and overseeing the activities of our client’s construction and geotechnical materials testing laboratories. This growing engineering consulting firm currently has three labs with the main lab in Burnsville, MN, a second in Rochester, MN and a third in Duluth, MN. This position will have overall responsibility for both labs and some field-testing staff. Testing will be performed on soil, aggregate, concrete and asphalt / bituminous pavement. The Director, Materials will properly train personnel and follow state and federal standards, project specifications and the company quality management system when performing tests. This person will have overall oversight of all lab operations including ensuring testing is completed in a safe and timely manner, a maintained and recorded log of daily work and tests performed, and time and materials expended.
While the focus of the position will be on laboratory oversight, there may be times that you will also function as an instructor, supervisor, material tester and spend time in the field addressing materials related issues. A strong knowledge of aggregates, concrete and bituminous materials and testing procedures is essential as is an understanding of materials properties and performance.
Position Responsibilities
- Ensures that Quality Managements System (QMS) is updated and maintained and adheres to the requirements of AASHTO R-18 (AASHTO Re:Source).
- Ensures that laboratory staff are properly trained and equipped to safely and accurately complete assigned tests in a timely manner
- Oversees the lab layout, organization and appearance, including keeping the area and equipment clean and uncluttered
- Oversees maintenance of equipment and calibration and adjustments as needed
- Oversees the administrative systems of the laboratory to ensure that reports and information (mathematical calculations, making graphical solutions and graphical representations) required to serve the client are properly prepared and reported
- Collects samples of soils and construction materials in the field to measure physical characteristics
- Performs a variety of tests on construction materials including soils, aggregates, concrete/mortar/grout, reinforcing steel and asphalt using materials-testing equipment
- Read construction documents to determine project details and specifications
- Neatly and accurately complete all required paperwork, including daily reports, test reports and timesheets in a timely manner
- Communicates orally and in writing with engineers and staff members, agency representatives, contractors and business and property owners
- Adhere to construction site safety guidelines and promote a safe working environment
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Education and Experience
- 5 years of experience performing laboratory testing on construction materials
- Experience running a construction materials lab, scheduling and managing staff, and performing test procedures
- Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Construction materials testing related certifications such as ACI, MnDOT and ICC
- Experience in a lab with AASHTO re:source (Formerly AMRL) Accreditation and the Accreditation process
- A two-year technical degree from an accredited school related to civil engineering/construction
- Good communications both written and oral with project team
- Comfortable using MS Office applications (Word/Excel/Outlook)
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record
- Ability to stand for long periods of time and frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds
