Position Overview:

The Novelis Kennesaw team is seeking a Surface Science Co-Op. The person in this role will report to Sarmistha Das, Lead Scientist in Surface and Coatings Cluster. The ideal candidate will be responsible for project deliverables including (1) Characteristics and implications of aluminum surfaces by different processes and alloys; (2) Statistical validation of new test methods. This position will help towards the delivery of (1) critical differences between new and existing alloys as produced on different production lines; (2) new test methods to accelerate speed and minimize costs of new alloy implementation. This co-op will begin in May 2025 and end in December 2025.

Responsibilities:

• Prepare surfaces using different processes and alloys
• Test surfaces for tribological, physical and chemical properties using existing and newly developed methods
• Analyze data and make recommendations.

Minimum Qualifications:

• 4th year Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or similar area of study
• Hands-on experience in the lab
• Working knowledge of applied mechanics
• Working knowledge of thermodynamics.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s student
• Understanding of tribological testing and surface characterization.
• Working knowledge of 2D/3D design
• Willingness to learn and build knowledge and experience in tribology
• Experience with reaction kinetics.
