The Chief Financial Officer is a strategic leader responsible for the financial health and stability of the hospital. This role requires a hands-on approach to financial management, including setting up, creating, and perfecting bookkeeping, accounting, and reporting standards. The CFO will ensure the hospital's financial operations align with regulatory compliance, industry best practices, and long-term organizational goals. The ideal candidate is an experienced financial executive with deep expertise in hospital financial accounting principles, revenue cycle management, cost control, and financial planning. They should have a vision for building an efficient, high-performing hospital finance organization and the ability to execute that vision. Proficiency in Medicare cost reporting is essential, as the CFO will oversee the preparation and submission of annual cost reports to Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs), ensuring accuracy and compliance with CMS requirements. This role demands a proactive and hands-on leader who is willing to get scrappy, dive into the details, and drive financial excellence.Essential Functions

Establish, implement, and oversee all financial operations, including bookkeeping, accounting, and financial reporting, ensuring accuracy and regulatory compliance.Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure fiscal responsibility.Lead revenue cycle management, optimizing billing, coding, collections, and payer negotiations to maximize reimbursement and minimize denials.Create and manage hospital budgets, financial forecasts, and long-term strategic financial plans.Monitor financial performance, analyzing variances, identifying cost-saving opportunities, and implementing corrective actions.Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including Medicare, Medicaid, and other payer requirements.Oversee the preparation and submission of annual Medicare cost reports, ensuring accuracy and compliance with CMS requirements.Drive improvements in financial systems, ERP implementations, and automation of financial processes.Serve as a financial advisor to the CEO and executive leadership team, providing insights and data-driven recommendations.Develop financial models for capital investments, expansion projects, and service line profitability.Partner with department heads to ensure financial discipline and accountability across the organization.Manage relationships with external auditors, regulatory agencies, banks, and other financial institutions.Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing finance and accounting team, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability.Behavioral Standards

Strong understanding of hospital financial operations, including revenue cycle management, cost accounting, and reimbursement methodologies.Deep knowledge of GAAP, FASB, and healthcare-specific accounting standards.Expertise in Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement rules, commercial insurance contracts, and value-based care financial models.Proficiency in Medicare cost reporting, including the preparation and submission of annual cost reports to Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs), and familiarity with CMS requirements.Familiarity with hospital financial reporting requirements, including U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) regulations.Strong understanding of financial system implementations, ERP solutions, and automation tools in healthcare finance.Knowledge of capital financing, debt structures, and hospital fundraising strategies.Awareness of healthcare regulatory compliance, including HIPAA, Stark Law, and Anti-Kickback Statutes.Wears nametag properly; follows dress code policy; answers phone correctly and promptly; is prepared for meetings; meets deadlines; does not participate in gossip; acts ethically and treats others with respect; respects customer’s and co-worker’s time; establishes and maintains effective relationships with customers and co-workers.Requirements

Experience

Minimum of 5-10 years of progressive financial leadership experience in a hospital or healthcare system.Proven track record as a Controller or Director of Finance with hands-on experience in accounting, reporting, and financial controls.Experience leading financial turnarounds, cost-saving initiatives, and process improvements.Strong background in revenue cycle management and payer contract negotiations.Experience working with hospital boards, executive teams, and regulatory agencies.Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing finance teams.Education

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required.Master’s degree (MBA, MHA, or equivalent) strongly preferred.License/Certifications

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP) preferred.Fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (FHFMA) is a plus.
