The Construction Safety Manager will be responsible for overseeing the safety practices and compliance on all construction activities. This role involves leading the safety efforts on-site, ensuring the protection of workers, contractors, and the general public from potential hazards. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in highway construction safety management, with at least 10 years of experience in ensuring adherence to safety protocols, regulations, and industry best practices.
Job Description
Safety Leadership and Compliance:
• Develop, implement, and manage safety programs tailored to highway construction projects.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations, including OSHA, DOT, and other relevant standards.
• Conduct regular safety audits and inspections of construction sites to identify potential hazards and ensure adherence to safety standards.
• Enforce safety protocols on-site, ensuring that workers, contractors, and subcontractors adhere to safety guidelines.
Training and Education:
• Provide ongoing safety training to workers, supervisors, and other personnel, focusing on safe practices, hazard identification, and emergency response.
• Conduct safety orientations for new workers, ensuring they understand the safety protocols and potential risks specific to highway construction projects.
• Lead toolbox talks and daily safety briefings to discuss potential hazards and safe work practices.
Incident Management :
• Investigate accidents and near misses, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
• Prepare and submit incident reports to senior management and regulatory agencies as required. • Coordinate with local authorities and emergency services in the event of a serious incident.
Risk Management:
• Perform job hazard analyses (JHAs) and assess the safety risks of each phase of the construction project.
• Develop and implement mitigation strategies to reduce risks associated with construction activities such as excavation, heavy equipment operation, and traffic control.
• Monitor weather conditions and adjust project activities to ensure worker safety in adverse conditions (e.g., storms, extreme temperatures).
Safety Equipment and PPE:
• Ensure that appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is available and used on-site by all workers.
• Maintain an inventory of safety equipment and ensure proper usage and maintenance.
Documentation and Reporting:
• Maintain detailed records of safety inspections, training sessions, accident investigations, and safety meetings.
• Prepare and present monthly safety performance reports to management, highlighting safety trends, accomplishments, and areas for improvement.
• Ensure all safety-related documentation is compliant with regulatory requirements.
Collaboration and Communication:
• Serve as the primary safety liaison between workers, contractors, and management, fostering a culture of safety and open communication.
• Collaborate with project managers and superintendents to incorporate safety considerations into project planning and scheduling.
• Participate in regular project meetings to discuss safety concerns and updates with all stakeholders.
Continuous Improvement:
• Continuously assess and improve the safety program, incorporating feedback from workers and safety audits.
• Stay current with industry trends, new safety regulations, and emerging technologies to enhance the safety program.
Experience/Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree in an Applied Science or Engineering Field preferred.
• 10+ years Previous experience in Health and Safety in major highway construction project
