Position: Electric Utility System Engineer


Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.


Overview:

A leading power utility is seeking an experienced System Engineer to join our engineering team. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the utility’s power distribution system. The successful candidate will work on high-voltage substations, relay systems, SCADA systems, and conduct power system planning studies to support the utility’s mission of delivering exceptional service.


Responsibilities:

• Substation Engineering: Design, upgrade, and maintain high-voltage substations, ensuring adherence to safety and reliability standards.

• Relay Systems: Program, test, and troubleshoot protective relay systems, with a focus on Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) relays.

• SCADA Systems: Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of SCADA systems to monitor and control utility operations.

• System Studies: Conduct power system planning studies, including load flow, short-circuit analysis, and coordination studies, and implement recommended solutions.

• Standards Compliance: Ensure all designs and operations comply with relevant industry standards such as IEEE, NERC, and regional reliability organizations.

• Collaboration: Work closely with operations, maintenance, and external contractors to ensure seamless project delivery.

• Project Management: Manage technical aspects of large-scale engineering projects, ensuring budgets and timelines are met.


Essential Requirements (Must Haves):

• Experience:

• Demonstrated expertise in the design, operation, and maintenance of high-voltage substations.

• Hands-on experience with protective relay systems, preferably Schweitzer relays (SEL).

• Proven experience with SCADA systems, including their design and integration into utility operations.

• Successful track record in conducting and implementing recommendations from power system planning studies.

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.

• Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of power system protection, SCADA, and industry standards (e.g., IEEE, NERC).


Preferred Qualifications (Desired Attributes):

• Professional Certification: PE license or ability to obtain one within a specified timeframe.

• Software Expertise: Experience with power system analysis and design software such as AutoCAD, Aspen, or CAPE.

• Project Experience: Background in managing engineering projects in a utility setting, with a focus on cost control and timely delivery.

• Communication Skills: Strong ability to communicate technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Team-Oriented: Proven success working in cross-functional teams and collaborating with diverse stakeholders.
