Position Title: Special Education Teacher (High School)
Location: Southampton County Public Schools
Reports To: Principal
Job Summary: The Special Education Teacher for High School is responsible for providing individualized instruction and support to students with special needs. This role involves developing and implementing educational plans tailored to each student's needs, working collaboratively with general education teachers, and fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities:
  1. Instructional Planning and Delivery:
    • Develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) based on each student's needs and goals.
    • Provide direct instruction and support in core academic subjects, adapted to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
    • Utilize a variety of teaching methods and strategies, including differentiated instruction, assistive technology, and individualized interventions.
  2. Student Assessment and Progress Monitoring:
    • Conduct assessments to evaluate student progress and identify areas of need.
    • Monitor and document student performance, progress, and behavior.
    • Adjust instructional strategies and interventions based on assessment data and student progress.
  3. IEP Development and Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with students, parents, and other educational professionals to develop, review, and revise IEPs.
    • Participate in IEP meetings and ensure that students' educational plans are implemented effectively.
    • Coordinate with general education teachers to support students in accessing the general curriculum and achieving their educational goals.
  4. Classroom Management and Support:
    • Create and maintain a positive, inclusive, and structured classroom environment.
    • Implement and enforce classroom rules and procedures to ensure a safe and productive learning environment.
    • Address and manage behavioral issues and provide support to help students develop self-regulation skills.
  5. Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with general education teachers, school counselors, and other staff to support students' educational needs.
    • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians to provide updates on student progress, address concerns, and collaborate on strategies for supporting students at home.
    • Engage in professional development and collaborate with other special education professionals to enhance skills and knowledge.
  6. Resource Management:
    • Utilize and manage educational resources, including specialized materials and assistive technology.
    • Ensure that students have access to necessary accommodations and modifications to support their learning.
    • Maintain accurate records of instructional activities, assessments, and student progress.
  7. Compliance and Documentation:
    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations regarding special education.
    • Prepare and submit required documentation, including IEPs, progress reports, and assessments, in a timely manner.
    • Participate in school-wide initiatives and contribute to the development of school policies related to special education.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Education, or a related field.
  • Valid state teaching certification in Special Education or secondary education.
  • Previous experience teaching students with special needs preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Proficiency in using assistive technology and educational software.
Work Environment:
  • Work is performed in a classroom setting and may include involvement in other school activities and meetings.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for IEP meetings, school events, and professional development.
