FLSA Status:   Exempt
Salary Range:  $114-121k

About the Role:
We are hiring an experienced  Sous Chef  for a private estate and residence in Washington, D.C., supporting a UHNW family office. In this role, you will collaborate closely with the Head Chef to deliver exceptional dining experiences for principals, their extended family, and guests. The position primarily operates in Washington, DC, but requires occasional travel to other residences or for international assignments.

Key Responsibilities:

Culinary Preparation:
  • Partner with the Head Chef to prepare meals for intimate gatherings (2–20 guests) and large-scale events (up to 400 guests).
  • Design menus that reflect seasonality and regional availability while accommodating dietary restrictions and preferences.
  • Ensure consistent, high-quality food preparation and presentation that aligns with the principal’s expectations.
  • Collaborate with the Head Chef on the development of mignardise, bread, dessert, and confectionery programs.
Service and Presentation:
  • Execute exceptional meal and beverage service, adapting to the tone and formality of each occasion.
  • Deliver seamless service for small dinners or large parties, demonstrating impeccable hospitality skills.
  • Oversee kitchen and service operations in the Head Chef's absence.
Kitchen Management:
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and fully stocked kitchen, ensuring compliance with all food safety and sanitation standards.
  • Assist with sourcing and procurement of seasonal ingredients, maintaining an efficient inventory rotation system.
  • Lead and manage contract kitchen staff as needed during events or the Head Chef’s absence.
Travel and Remote Support:
  • Travel domestically and internationally to support culinary needs at other residences or for principal events.
  • Assist in preparing remote kitchens for seamless service during the principal’s travels.
  • Lead food preparation for the principal’s return during the Head Chef’s travel assignments.

 

Qualifications and Skills:
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Culinary Arts or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least 4 years of experience in a professional kitchen, with knowledge of high-volume food preparation.
  • Proficiency in Safe Food Handling practices and a basic understanding of wine pairing.
Skills and Attributes:
  • Strong organizational skills, creativity, and a commitment to excellence.
  • Adaptability to meet the evolving needs of the principal and guests.
  • Technological proficiency, with familiarity in using Microsoft Office and internet research tools.
  • Discretion and reliability, with the ability to maintain confidentiality.
Physical and Travel Requirements:
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as standing, bending, crouching, and reaching.
  • Domestic and international travel may be required; candidates must have or be able to obtain a valid U.S. passport.

 

Work Environment and Schedule:
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays based on the principal’s schedule.
  • Work environments may include the principal’s home, remote kitchens, or outdoor event spaces.
