Job Description

A renewable energy company is seeking a highly skilled Legal Counsel to join their esteemed team. This role is instrumental in the development of renewable energy projects, requiring diligent collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to secure essential permits and approvals. The Legal Counsel will manage a portfolio of projects from initial site control to Notice to Proceed, ensuring they are meticulously prepared for sale or construction.


Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with external vendors to obtain favorable outcomes for project approvals, including reviews under the SEQRA, special use permits, site plan and subdivision approvals, variances, and rezonings.
  • Monitor and pursue state and federal incentive programs to secure available funding efficiently.
  • Negotiate and secure payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) agreements and other related agreements.
  • Conduct comprehensive research and reviews of local, state, and federal regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Maintain strong relationships with contractors and key stakeholders.
  • Attend and provide support at municipal board meetings.
  • Serve as the main liaison for project approvals, handling meetings, submissions, communications, and follow-ups with state, federal and local authorities, municipalities, and other relevant organizations.
  • Manage the selection and awarding of contracts for civil, environmental, survey, electrical, and other engineering services.
  • Ensure compliance with all post-approval documentation and requirements.
  • Collaborate with the EPC team on project timelines and schedules.


Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate degree and active law license in the relevant state.
  • A minimum of 5+ years of experience in environmental and/or land use law.
  • Renewable energy experience is preferred.
  • Authorization to work in the United States (U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident).
  • Ability and willingness to travel approximately 10-15% of the time.
  • Proficiency in documentation management and project management tools.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
