Job Description
POLITICO is looking for a California-based Senior Policy Editor to ensure our California policy reporting is essential reading to people in government, industry and advocacy who rely on us to do their jobs. This senior editor will oversee coverage on key issues like climate, energy, education, transportation, health, labor, tech and the state budget. The editor will also breathe new life into our daily Pro newsletter, making it a go-to resource for our professional audience. This is a unique opportunity to join a growing newsroom and lead policy coverage in the state that regularly passes landmark laws on everything from emissions standards to election deepfakes.

The editor will be a self-starter who works closely with other California team leaders on day-to-day operations as well as newsroom leadership on growth, audience development and events. This person will also edit high-impact articles and convene key policy teams across our Washington, European and state-based newsroom to generate ambitious global enterprise pieces.

What You'll Need:

  • A track record of breaking news and developing compelling enterprise stories on national politics and policy
  • Experience managing and coaching reporters, superior organizational skills and a track record of strong storytelling and editing
  • Experience editing and reporting on congressional politics
  • A rigorous commitment to fair-minded, nonpartisan journalism
  • A demonstrated track record of producing ambitious, scoop-driven journalism


The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in Sacramento, CA is $120,000.00-$160,000.00 per year. The final salary offered, which may be higher than the current anticipated salary range, to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and years of experience within the job, type and years of experience within the industry, education, etc.
