We’re expanding and have an exciting opportunity to join our Power Delivery team as a Substation Engineering Manager for the East region! This role will lead the execution and development of substation projects within our growing Power Delivery division, with responsibilities across business development, proposal creation, process improvement, team growth, technical project management, and client relations. The position requires a regular in-office presence at regional locations and occasional domestic travel.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain extensive knowledge of principles, practices, procedures, and standards for utility power distribution, transmission, and substation systems.
- Lead design efforts for substation and switching station projects, including:
- Physical Design: Engineering for equipment, structures, ductbanks, grounding, lighting, static protection, and relay houses.
- Protection & Control (P&C) Design: Development of protection systems, one-line and three-line diagrams, wiring and connection diagrams, relay schemes, and communication systems.
- Equipment Replacement: Engineering for replacement programs.
- New Builds: Conceptual and detailed design for greenfield projects.
- Develop design concepts, perform engineering calculations, analyses, and prepare estimates for capital substation upgrades.
- Conduct site surveys for major projects, present designs to stakeholders, and assist in detailed cost estimations.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and codes for operations, maintenance, renewals, and new installations.
- Maintain expertise in power system protection and substation relaying schemes.
- Develop and validate complex electrical system models and study findings.
- Create specifications for major electrical equipment and coordinate field activities with clients, subcontractors, and construction teams.
- Perform field evaluations for estimating, compare project documents for accuracy, and manage the estimate review process.
- Supervise and review work from a team of up to 5 engineers and designers.
- Oversee project scheduling, budgeting, and scope management.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent, with 10 years of relevant experience.
- Experience with substation project management, including EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction).
- 3+ years in engineering management, ideally with experience building a team from the ground up.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
- Strong communication skills; prior experience in business development is a plus.
