Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Substation Engineering Manager to join our growing Power Delivery Team in the Central/Mountain region. This role involves managing the execution and development of substation projects, including technical distribution, proposal development, process improvement, team building, and client management. The ideal candidate will ensure all project requirements are met or exceeded while contributing to the continued growth and success of the Power Delivery group. Regular in-office presence at regional office locations and domestic travel are required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain extensive knowledge of principles, practices, and standards related to utility power distribution, transmission, and substation systems.
  • Oversee the engineering and design of substations and switching stations, including:
  • Physical Design : Equipment, structures, ductbanks, grounding, lighting, static protection, relay houses.
  • P&C Design : Protection and control systems, one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, wiring and connection diagrams, relay schemes, and communication systems.
  • Equipment Replacement : Engineering and design for replacement programs.
  • New Builds : Greenfield project design.
  • Develop concept design alternatives, engineering calculations, analysis, and cost estimates for major substation projects.
  • Conduct site surveys, create concept designs, and present designs to management and clients.
  • Assist in preparing detailed cost estimates for large-scale substation projects.
  • Stay current with utility industry standards and codes, ensuring all work complies with applicable standards for O&M, replacements, and new installations.
  • Develop and review electrical system models and validate study findings and recommendations.
  • Create and review electrical specifications for major apparatus.
  • Schedule and participate in field walk-downs with customers, subcontractors, and construction personnel.
  • Conduct field evaluations for estimate preparation and ensure project document accuracy and consistency.
  • Lead the estimate review process with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and oversee the work of up to five engineers and designers.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent.
  • At least 10 years of related experience in substation projects and EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction).
  • Minimum of 3 years of engineering management experience; prior experience building a team from scratch is highly preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and prior experience with business development are preferred.
