Histotechnician – Pittsburgh, PA

POSITION OVERVIEW

This position requires quality assurance, instrument setup, standard operating procedure (SOP) review & development, preparation of samples in compliance with the CBI Laboratory’s Quality Assurance programs and SOPs, the knowledge and ability to perform routine histology technical procedures, and additional assistance to the other assays as needed.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare clinical samples according to scientific methodology and specialized analytical techniques in compliance with the CBI Laboratory’s Quality Assurance programs and SOPs, CLIA, and CAP requirements.
  • Accurately manage specimen handling and processing according to SOPs.
  • Embeds, cuts, prepares, and stains slides for research and clinical specimens.
  • Uses Exemplar, laboratory LIMS, to manage and track patient samples.
  • Maintains histology laboratory equipment and, if applicable, schedules performance maintenance.
  • Demonstrates the capability of identifying problems, correcting/addressing them, and immediately notifying Histology and/or Laboratory leadership.
  • Writes & reviews SOPs as needed.
  • Flexible in assisting other departments as needed and participating in clinical and research projects.

This position requires comprehensive or specialized knowledge of the laboratory as well as education/experience consistent with CLIA 1988 requirements for testing personnel. Additionally, their work requires creativity, invention, imagination, & talent to not only successfully design, develop, & perform science experiments to ultimately troubleshoot analytical problems & associated tables, graphs & reports; but to also design, develop, perform & validate science experiments for laboratory developed tests (LDTs) in the research lab and in transferring to the commercial lab. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • AA degree and/or Histotechnician (AA) in a scientific discipline or equivalent with at least 2-5 years of experience, preferably in a clinical histology setting, with technical proficiency in histological methodology and specialized analytical techniques.
  • The Histotechnologists in the clinical laboratory are placed on a track towards obtaining American Society of Clinical Pathology(ASCP) Histotechnician(HT)/Histotechnologist(HTL) board certification if not already credentialed upon hire and are expected to obtain such certification within 2 years of employment.

  • Clinical Histology Lab methodologies, general regulatory requirements, and laboratory techniques.
  • Laboratory QA requirements, knowledge of computers, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Daily involvement in performing scientific laboratory aspects including initiating, directing, and executing.
  • Clinical production, which requires advanced knowledge and exercises discretion and judgment.
  • Serve as a collaborator/consultant on external, approved projects.
  • Spectrum of functions related to Quality Assurance.
  • Assist with the day-to-day operations of the Histology Department.
  • Helps ensure adherence to QC policies for equipment and reagents.
  • Takes part in assisting with maintaining an accurate count for inventory.
  • If applicable, interact with vendors for quotes and potential equipment issues.
  • May help to ensure other histologists are properly trained and follow SOPs and QC policies.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Strong understanding and practical experience with histology technical procedures.
  • Organizational skills, computer skills, databases, time-management skills, problem-solving skills, and strong communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of quality control purposes and procedures.
  • Independent thinker, able to read, understand, and troubleshoot assays and all related instrumentation as needed.
  • Computers, analytical laboratory instruments, reference materials, QA policies, and procedures.
  • Appropriate use of personal protective equipment when in laboratory areas.
