HVAC and Plumbing Design Engineer

Location: Tampa, FL

Employment Type: Contract - to - Hire


Position Overview

We seek a skilled and experienced HVAC and Plumbing Design Engineer to lead the engineering and design of HVAC and plumbing systems for various facility types, primarily focusing on HyperScale and Colocation Data Center design. This role involves designing, modeling, and optimizing systems to meet high-performance standards, conducting energy audits, and applying sustainable design strategies.


You can work on complex projects across diverse facility areas, including administrative spaces, laboratories, maintenance workshops, electrical distribution centers, and chemical storage. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in HVAC design, CFD modeling, sustainable engineering practices, and a proven track record of obtaining LEED certifications for industrial buildings.


Key Responsibilities

  • Design HVAC and plumbing systems for various facility types, primarily focusing on HyperScale and Colocation Data Centers.
  • Participate in and lead Design-Bid-Build and Alternative Conceptual-Bid-Build project delivery methods.
  • Conducted data center airflow CFD modeling for internal and external spaces.
  • Perform energy audits, efficiency studies, and code reviews while applying sustainable design strategies.
  • Develop detailed designs for HVAC cooling and heating loads, equipment sizing, and energy modeling.
  • Support additional areas such as administrative offices, laboratories, chemical storage, electrical distribution centers, and flammable liquids storage.
  • Review technical submittals and participate in bid review processes.
  • Apply green building initiatives, including LEED certification and Green Globes standards.


Required Qualifications


Education & Certification

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited program.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) License required.
  • AP Certification with experience obtaining LEED certification for industrial buildings.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in HVAC and plumbing design.
  • Experience with Data Center airflow CFD modeling (e.g., Cadence Reality Data Center Design, formerly 6Sigma Room).
  • Knowledge of large-scale water and air-cooled chiller plant design preferred.

Technical Skills

  • Familiarity with NFPA standards and International Codes Council (ICC) Suite of Codes.
  • Proficiency in HVAC system energy modeling for energy codes.
  • Strong knowledge of ASHRAE Handbooks/Standards, ASPE Design Handbooks, and SMACNA Standards.
  • Experience reviewing technical submittals and evaluating bids.
  • Understanding of green building initiatives, such as LEED and Green Globes.
