Why does the job exist?
The New Mexico Corrections Department Paralegal and Legal Assistant Advanced is responsible for: providing
paralegal and legal assistant services to the Office of General Counsel (OGC) representing the New Mexico
Corrections Department statewide by reviewing and preparing legal documents; calendaring deadlines;
conducting basic legal research; communicating efficiently and professionally with agency staff and outside
personnel, lawyers, members of the public; assisting with agency IPRA requests; maintaining legal files and
other work assignments as requested by the OGC attorneys.
The incumbent will serve as the advanced paralegal for the OGC which handles the supervision of all OGC
paralegal requirements such as tracking/ gathering documents and discovery for both attorneys and outside
counsel. The incumbent will also oversee the assignment of case and work requests within the agency.

Provide legal services in representing NMCD statewide by preparing legal documents, conducting legal
research, maintaining files and establishing workflow.

Experienced in:
* Reading court or legal documents
* Conducting legal research
* Working in a legal environment
* Scheduling depositions
* Preparing exhibits for court cases
* Compiling reports or other materials to be used by an attorney or other members of a legal staff.
Minimum Qualification
Associate degree in Paralegal Studies and two (2) years of work experience drafting and preparing legal correspondence, conducting legal research, and maintaining a case management/tracking system. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a Driver's license. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is
conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an adult prison environment, which may include daily contact with inmates. Willingness
to work in a correctional facility, may be required to work odd hours, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
