This position operates within the Wastewater Surveillance (WWS) Program of the Environmental Health Epidemiology (EHEB), Center for Health Protection (CHP), Public Health Division (PHD) in NMDOH.
Why does the job exist?
The primary purpose of this job is to work with water treatment facilities, the Scientific Laboratory, and the CDC to maintain and grow NMDOH's wastewater surveillance system to monitor for various infectious disease pathogens. The wastewater epidemiologist will work with the wastewater surveillance program supervisor to identify trends in wastewater data, report sample results to the CDC, build tools to communicate results with state and locals stakeholders, and develop guidance for state and local entities.
How does it get done?
Job duties include communicating with wastewater treatment facility operators for onboarding and maintenance of sampling; Compiling and analyzing data received from the state lab; and reporting and dissemination of info to the CDC and state and local stakeholders. The incumbent will staff the EHEB on-call line 1-2 days per month and participate in legislative bill analysis during NM legislative session.

Ideal Candidate
Experience conducting surveillance for reportable conditions
Experience with data analysis programs, R preferred
Experience with presenting public health data to stakeholders
Minimum Qualification
Master's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Science, Social Sciences or Statistics. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, stooping, bending, reaching and lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds may be required. Some travel with the occasional overnight stay may be required.
