Job Description

The School of Arts and Sciences seeks adjunct faculty to teach sections of BIO.150 (General Biology I) and BIO.255 (Microbiology) labs. These courses meet on our Boston campus.
BIO.150:
This laboratory course emphasizes experimental approaches to understanding basic and applied aspects of cellular and molecular biology. Topics include cell structure and function, biochemistry, genetics and heredity, and biotechnology.
BIO.255:
An introduction to microbial principles, this course is designed to give a functional understanding of microorganisms, their role in disease and the environment, and our defenses against infections. The laboratory covers the principles of microscopy, aseptic techniques, and microbial cultivation and control.
Responsibilities

  • Deliver didactic, laboratory and/or experiential instruction via in-person format
  • Provide students with an approved syllabus that includes course objectives and learning outcomes, teaching methodology, attendance policies in line with those of the School, texts and readings, assignments and deliverables, timelines and evaluation criteria
  • Provide engaging assignments that demonstrate the real-world applications and relevance to medicine and health care of concepts covered
  • Supervise students during labs regarding safe and responsible use of lab equipment, obtaining good data and completing assignments within the time provided
  • Facilitate teamwork and development of practical skills
  • Use the University's learning management system to post syllabus, assignments, grades and other materials and to communicate with students
  • Advise and assist students through office hours and/or scheduled appointments, by videoconference, phone or email, and through other University-approved mechanisms
  • Provide service including student mentoring, ongoing course development, and assessment
  • Engage with biology faculty and fellow lab instructors in team-teaching environment
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor
Required:
  • Minimum of a master's degree in Biology or related field
  • Minimum of one year of teaching experience at the college/university level
  • Experience teaching laboratory at the college/university level and/or strong practical background
  • Commitment to undergraduate, graduate and/or professional education and student success
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Must be able to work independently and effectively interact with a wide array of parties at all levels (students, faculty, administration/staff, alumni, and external constituents, including healthcare industry professionals)
  • Experience teaching health care-focused students preferred
