Job Summary Tuskegee University seeks a skilled staff accountant with some payroll experience. In this role, the ideal candidate will play an important part in our financial operations ensuring accuracy in accounting and compliance with the law. In keeping with the President's commitment to Tuskegee University becoming an "Outcomes-Oriented University" the ideal Staff Accountant will be able to assist in the daily operations of the Accounting Department in alignment with the Offices of the Associate Vice President/Controller and Chief Financial Officer/Vice President of Fiscal Affairs of the University. This position reports to the Accounting Manager.
Essential Job Duties Detail orientation and strong organization skills
Excellent analytical and computer skills
Tracks and reconciles records for accounts payables transactions, payroll deductions (donations), advancement, etc.
Reviews and reconciles donor statements, bank statements, etc.
Posts general ledger transactions as needed
Assists with fixed asset reconciliations and tagging of assets
Assists in month-end and year-end closing processes, including journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations.
Conducts general administrative duties such as answering phones, working with the campus community in other departments, and responding to phone calls Handles sensitive and extensive confidential information
Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the department
Completes duties and responsibilities in compliance with college standards, policies and guidelines
Communicate with Manager, Accountants, and/or Associate Vice President for Business Affairs/Controller, CFO on work status and issues that arise
Follow all University Health and Safety programs and actively participate in training to gain knowledge and understanding
Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned to support the Accounting Manager and Fiscal Affairs

Qualifications (Education, Experience and Specialized Training) - Associates degree or 60 college hours from an accredited college or university and One (l) years of accounting experience or Two (2) years of experience and 30 hours from an accredited college or university
- College/University accounting experience (preferred)
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written
- Ability to exercise analytical skills
- Experience with computerized office tools such as Excel, PowerPoint, and Word Ellucian experience (preferred)
Physical Demands - Physical ability to remain seated at a desk while working with a computer for the great majority of the workday.
- Possess the skills to operate a calculator, copier, fax machine, television, etc.
- Must be able to lift 10 to 25 lbs as it relates to copier paper, calculator, laptop, notebooks, etc.
Skills and Attributes - College/University accounting experience (preferred)
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written
- Ability to exercise analytical skills
- Experience with computerized office tools such as Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
- Ellucian experience (preferred)
- Professional development and light travel required
- Provide excellent customer service in a courteous manner
- Possess good, standard English oral and written communication skills.
- Read and interpret financial and job-related documents with accuracy
- Must be a team player
