Job Description

The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design and development of systems and equipment for Direct Reduction plants and emerging technology projects.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

While Senior Engineers do not have direct reports, they serve as mechanical discipline leads, providing technical oversight across various projects. They assign tasks to engineers and designers and guide them as needed.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform mechanical designs and analyses, including basic engineering calculations, with guidance from a Senior Mechanical Engineer when necessary.
  • Develop conceptual design sketches and collaborate with designers to create detailed mechanical drawings.
  • Lead mechanical design efforts for projects by:
  • Directing engineers and designers in equipment layout and other related tasks.
  • Reviewing and verifying mechanical drawings, calculations, sketches, etc.
  • Preparing specifications and requisitions to support the purchasing process.
  • Reviewing and approving vendor quotations, drawings, and QA documents.
  • Offer technical support to the Aftermarket, Inspections, and Purchasing departments by reviewing vendor submittals and conducting on-site inspections of mechanical equipment.
  • Provide technical guidance to designers.
  • Evaluate designs and vendor-supplied equipment to ensure they meet engineering specifications, applicable codes and standards, and project requirements.
  • Review and check drawings and drafts for consistency with design specifications.
  • Contribute to the design and integration of new technology into larger systems.
  • Assist senior engineers and management with design improvements and suggestions to optimize functionality.
  • Travel to fabrication workshops and job sites to gather data, interact with plant and fabricator personnel, conduct inspections, and understand conditions that inform design decisions (e.g., operating temperatures).
  • Travel for business trips and field assignments as needed for project and corporate functions.
  • Prepare technical specifications for mechanical equipment design, fabrication, and procurement.
  • Support Sales and Estimating teams with proposal preparation, including equipment selection, plant layout, and engineering estimates.
  • Collaborate with various company departments and employees to ensure consensus on assignments, providing solutions that benefit all parties involved.
  • Coordinate with external engineering consultants and clients.
  • Suggest and implement design improvements for equipment.
  • Mentor and support mechanical engineers and designers.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft and Autodesk products.
  • Strong technical writing and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to meet project deadlines and deliverables.
  • In-depth mechanical engineering knowledge and understanding of industrial processes.
  • Capability to apply mechanical engineering principles to solve complex problems.

Preferred Skills/Abilities:

  • Experience with international travel.
  • Background in industrial plant operations.
  • Familiarity with computer-aided simulation and analysis tools (e.g., FEA, CFD, Heat Transfer).
  • Expertise in designing dust collection systems, adhering to NFPA and local codes.
  • Experience in designing industrial fire protection systems, following NFPA and local codes.
  • Proficiency in using design software for piping and gas system analysis and layout.
  • Expertise in hydraulic systems design and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of piping design, stress analysis, and selecting pipe hangers and supports.
  • Experience with material handling system design, layout, and specifications.
  • Experience in designing and specifying water treatment systems.
  • Familiarity with specifying, troubleshooting, and starting up water pump systems.

Education and Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or a related technology field.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in an industrial or technical setting, preferably in the steel industry.

Travel Requirements:

  • 10% - 25% international and domestic travel, depending on project needs.

Physical Requirements:
