Department of Psychiatry

ACADEMIC INPATIENT PSYCHIATRIST

The University of Iowa Department of Psychiatry is seeking faculty for a position as an Inpatient Psychiatrist. Appointment will be as a Clinician Scholar - a non-tenure clinical track at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The overall philosophy of this academic division is the provision of comprehensive patient-centered care in our inpatient settings and a variety of unique subspecialty practice settings within our healthcare system.

Department of Psychiatry

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa is renowned for its rich history and ongoing growth, marked by significant expansions in faculty and innovative partnerships, such as with the Iowa Neuroscience Institute. The department has enhanced its clinical services by developing novel new services such as our Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) and our Neurobehavioral Specialty Unit (NBSU), a 4bed intensive care setting for our most complex patients with challenging behaviors. We have a total of 88 inpatient beds across 6 units, including a 15 bed child psychiatry unit, a 14 bed geriatric unit, 15 bed Psychotic Disorders Unit, a 25 bed unit for general psychiatry -a 15 bed Medical Psychiatry Unit, and the Neurobehavioral Specialty Unit. We have partnered with Emergency Medicine to staff a mental health services team (MD, social work, APPs) in the emergency room and in the fall of 2025 we will be opening a new 12-bed section of the emergency room dedicated to the treatment of psychiatric patients. Our short-stay CSU will be expanding in the fall of 2024 from 12 to 16 beds with an additional 5 beds for adolescents.

Our outpatient services include a vibrant Interventional Psychiatry service that includes ECT, TMS, ketamine and esketamine and a research protocol in psychedelic medicine.  Our Addictions Recovery Collaborative has an ever-growing program of medication assisted treatment.  Other specialty clinics include Womens Wellness, Neuropsychiatry, Huntingtons Disease, and unique program with specialty care in patients with Intellectual Disability and Mental Illness (ID-MI) - the only program of its kind in the country.

Committed to excellence in teaching, the department has a large number of training programs including general psychiatry (12 residents per year), combined family medicine/psychiatry (4 residents per year) and combined internal medicine/psychiatry (2 residents per year). Our fellowships include child and adolescent psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, and addiction medicine.  Our program provides residents with opportunities to learn from leaders in various psychiatric fields, supported by a faculty known for high-quality patient care and educational contributions.

We work hard to make a difference and strive daily to uphold the high standards set by our predecessors, finding joy in seeing patients improve and making new discoveries to enhance care. Our department, much like Iowa City, is known for its helpful, friendly, and caring environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • MD or DO degree (or foreign graduate equivalent)
  • Licensure (or eligibility for licensure) in the state of Iowa
  • Completion of an accredited psychiatry residency
  • Board eligibility or board certification in Psychiatry
  • Applicants must have a commitment to patient care and teaching
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching medical students, residents and fellows and/or related scholarly activity
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience promoting an inclusive culture in the workforce and academic environment.
